“How are the sequences from Pillow Talk´ and Fringe´ different? Discuss the differences in pace and style of editing as well as the effect the editing has on meaning/the audiences reception of the extracts”
In the extracts of “Pillow Talk” and “Fringe” we can clearly see the contrasting styles in which editing is used to show the conflicting ideas. “Pillow talk was a romantic comedy film which was released in 1959 starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day. The definition of pillow talk; the relaxed, talking that often occurs between two partners after the act of sex, usually put by cuddling and other forms of showing affection.(Source Wikipedia)
Fringe is an American science fiction TV series which started in 2008, starring Anna Torv and Joshua Jackson. Because Films (in Total Time) are shorter than overall TV shows they have to have a faster passe so that the viewers are not board.
In Fringe the pace of editing is extremely fast. This is because it reflects the genre the TV show is in. Fringe is a sci-fi thriller TV show and it contains a lot of action. The quick editing help to make the TV show more real for the viewers and helps to keep them engaged in what is happening rather than sit at a screen that is not moving. There are 27-29 Different screen changes in Fringe in about 4 minutes of a certain scene. This equates to about 8-10 scene changes a minute. Which in the TV world is very very fast. In the first 1 minute the camera focus alternates between the two men. The Camera constantly swaps side to show who is talking an who is not.
In the first few scenes allot of close ups are used. This is a very clever way to keep the viewers watching because rather than looking away you will keep watching in suspense waiting for the next comment from either of the men. The next major scene change is to a pan of the Capitol Building and a blimp that's flying above the building. There was a rapid flash of bright light that looks like a Explosion to the viewer. The change between this scene and the last is massive as before the scene was dark and dingy, where as this scene was bight outside and very well lit. This is another tactic to help the viewer stay engaged, this scene is very short. The bridge between this scene and the next is short. So what could be said is that this bridge scene is just to gap the scenes rather than jump from one to another.
It could be perceived thats this is what might happen later in the show. When the "Explosion" happens the screen is englofed in Light and the camera starts Shaking, like a person hand holding a camera. This all helps to make the viewer think its real.
In the next scene the audience’s attention is brought to a piece of paper, which can clearly be seen through the help of natural lighting. The angle of camera and the style of the text make it nearly impossible for the viewer to read what’s on this paper. This could show that the piece of paper takes up a certain amount of importance but that will remain hidden from the viewer until it’s revealed, creating suspense.
Overall for fringe what seems to be clear is that the editing is much quicker than Pillow Talk, this could be from the age gap between the two or more likely Just because its ment to be a much higher paced Show.
Pillow Talk is different compared to Fringe. Pillow Talk is a film set in the 1950s right from the word go we can see that its a huge difference.
To round off i would say that Fringe is much better than Pillow talk as it keeps the audience involved with the story, if the editing was any slower than people would start to lose interest and thier minds would wonder.
